Les femmes ‍- Who Makes It

Three women in colorful traditional clothing stirring large tubs of yellow dough or porridge outdoors against a brick wall.

Shea butter has been made the same way in West Africa for generations — by hand, by women, from a tree that cannot be farmed or planted. The shea tree grows wild across the savanna belt that stretches from Senegal to the Horn of Africa, and it can take up to twenty years before a tree produces its first nuts. What comes from it is not mass-produced — it's gathered, season by season, by the people who have always known how.

The nuts are collected by hand, then boiled, dried, shelled, crushed, roasted, and finally kneaded into butter — entirely without machines or chemical solvents. It's slow, physical work, done almost exclusively by women's cooperatives, often the same families and communities for generations. That patience is exactly why the result is richer: hand-processed shea butter keeps nearly all of its natural vitamins and fatty acids, where factory-refined versions lose much of what makes it worth using in the first place.

Women's Gold

Across West Africa, shea butter is known as “women's gold” — not just for its colour, but because it's one of the few parts of the local economy run entirely by women, for their own benefit.

The income supports households directly: food, school fees, small businesses of their own. Choosing hand-made, cooperative-sourced shea butter isn't only a better product on your skin — it's a direct link to the women who made it.

How a nut becomes butter

01

Gathering

Fruit is collected from the ground after it falls — never picked. The pulp is removed and the nut kept.

02

Drying & cracking

Nuts dry in the sun for days, then are cracked open by hand to release the kernel inside.

03

Roasting & grinding

Kernels are roasted over wood fire and ground to a dark paste. This is where the scent comes from.

The paste is kneaded with water until the butter separates and rises. It is skimmed, boiled, filtered, and left to set.
